The FBI Files on Elvis Presley
The FBI file concerning Elvis Presley contains apparently 663 pages. I am of the opinion that there exists classified documents about Elvis that the public has not been given access to… what I like to call the X-files (See the X-Files page).
There is nothing in the documents we know of that even suggests that Elvis was under investigation by the FBI.
In brief the documents of the Elvis files deal with the following matters;
-> Letters from the public expressing concern about the effect Elvis had on the American youth. It is also mentioned in several letters his apparent vulgar and immoral behavior during concerts. In one letter to J. Edgar Hoover (dated May 16, 1956) a former member of the Army Intelligence Service writes that Elvis is a “… danger to the security of the United States”. (See examples in the files below; Part 1, page 35 and 36 / Part 2, page 3)
-> Various letters and newspaper clippings describing extortion attempts on Elvis.
-> Death threats and threats of kidnapping during his engagement in Las Vegas in August 1970. (See the files below; Part 2, page 7)
-> Files on a South African citizen (Griessel-Landau) who pretended to be a dermatologist. It turned out later that he was an impostor. He first threatened Elvis to expose personal information, and later he tried to extort Elvis of 2000 USD, without succeeding (1959).
-> In one document a FBI agent informed J. Edgar Hoover that he should not meet with Elvis because of his long hair and outrageous outfit. (See the files below; Part 1, page 6)
-> Files documenting a planned theft of one of Elvis' private aircrafts (a Lockheed Jetstar).
-> Papers documenting Elvis’ concern for people in the entertainment business such as The Beatles and Jane Fonda, and their alleged damaging influence on the nation. The FBI memo refer to Elvis’ visit to the FBI Headquarters, and that he would like to advise FBI director Hoover “that The Beatles laid the groundwork for many of the problems we are having with young people by their filthy unkempt appearances and suggestive music while entertaining in this country during the early and middle 1960s”. (See the files below; Part 1, page 9)
